A Day In New York

A Day In New York

The beginning of our schooling-New York. Throughout this experience, we are trying to look at each destination, each society, each culture as a lesson in itself. Some call this the school of life, but for now we will call it the school of travel. By treating each location as a lesson, we hope to have more sensitive senses in order to grasp that lesson plan.

For New York, the sense of urgency and strict manipulation of time seems to be the focal point of the lesson. In a place that seems to be in a rush to do everything, we wondered how anyone could possibly be present; it was baffling to us. We met a cab driver who was explaining how much joy he experienced in the commotion, and how he had seen many places all around the world, but felt at peace in a city that some people would call chaos.  It became clear that the truth to a quote from Mihaly Csikszentmihhalyi became evident: "to improve life, one must improve the quality of experience." Our drivers experience of everything around him came from within, from his own interpretation, while our interpretation came from within us, choosing to interpret the experience as chaotic and overwhelming. However, as we spent more time in this  spectacular place, we started to see the beauty of this melting pot of a city. With divine food choices on every single corner, beautiful views from every lookout point, and the diversity of all its inhabitants. Although we left exhausted, having tried to cram every tourist destination in our schedules, there was such beauty in the experience and we loved every second of it.

Our favorite day of our time spent in New York was our one year anniversary. We spent the day walking through Central Park, drinking wine and cocktails at the boathouse(highly recommended), eating the most ridiculous steaks, and ending our night on a rooftop lounge to enjoy some breathtaking sights.
